It is a war of attrition in every sense of the word. Yet much of the time, it is being kept simmering at a low level, as was the case overnight from Sunday into Monday and in the early hours of the new week. Late Sunday evening, the U.S. military said it had detected – most likely by satellite – Islamic Revolutionary Guard militiamen preparing two rocket launchers capable of dispersing mines in the Strait of Hormuz. Shortly after the announcement, the U.S. military launched overnight raids on Revolutionary Guard positions on Larak Island, killing and wounding several people, according to sources within the Revolutionary Guards.

Ever since the United States adopted a policy of sanctions and economic pressure on Iran, negotiations between the two parties have made no progress. The visit of Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammad Abdulrahman Al Thani to Tehran on Thursday aimed to revive these talks, particularly with a view to facilitating smoother passage through the Strait of Hormuz. On Friday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi skillfully seized on the visit to make a cautious overture toward the United States. Posting a photo with the Qatari official on his X account, he accompanied it with a message stating that returning to the negotiating table "is not impossible."

In Damascus, Tuesday evening's announcement by the leader of the Kurdish-dominated Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) of the group's dissolution and the integration of its fighters into the Syrian army remains a landmark event due to its highly symbolic significance. It speaks to President Ahmad al-Sharaa's determination to rebuild a state capable of embracing all Syrian communities and ethnic groups — some of which, like the Kurds, had eventually developed their own institutions. This is precisely what the Turkish presidency noted on Wednesday, stating that "at this stage, the dissolution of the SDF represents an important step toward stability in Syria."

The Israeli state appears determined to counter Turkish ambitions in Syria, drawing a lukewarm response from Washington. On Iran, the United States is now favoring a strategy of economic strangulation. In Lebanon, Hezbollah is facing increasing U.S. pressure. In the Middle East, the major development of the week of August 17–23 was the standoff between Israel and Turkey in Syria. The affair began on Tuesday with a strike on the Abu al-Duhur airport in the province of Idlib, in southwestern Syria — out of service since the start of the Syrian war, but home to a presence of the new Syrian army under Ahmad al-Sharaa's authority.

Relations between Turkey and Israel have hit rock bottom: three days after an Israeli airstrike on a disused base in northwestern Syria — which Israel suspects Ankara intends to use — two new offensives, this time verbal, have accelerated the deterioration of ties between the two Eastern Mediterranean powers. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office on Friday called Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan an "antisemitic dictator," stating that Israel would act against "Turkey's attempts to destabilize the region." "We will not tolerate Turkish military entrenchment advancing southward, as it poses a threat to us," Netanyahu had said on Wednesday, while Turkey denies any presence at the bombed Syrian site.

As the Iranian mullah regime continues its relentless near-daily hangings of Iranian teenagers and young people — most of them schoolchildren and university students — from cranes, the Trump Administration has effectively declared an all-out economic war against the Islamic Republic, as President Donald Trump stated unequivocally in the early hours of Thursday. At a press briefing, the White House chief announced that the United States would shortly impose 'unprecedented' economic sanctions designed to completely isolate Iran economically. Later on Thursday, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent — now a sworn enemy of the mullah regime — was even more explicit, stressing that 'Iran will face the most severe sanctions ever imposed on any country,' and adding that U.S. authorities will take measures against any country that continues to maintain trade relations with Iran.

Several diplomatic and military developments marked Wednesday in the Middle East, with renewed tensions between Israel and Turkey over the Syrian issue. The latest episode unfolded on Wednesday, a day after Israeli aircraft bombed the Abu al-Duhur air base in the Idlib province of northwestern Syria. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Wednesday that he had "clearly" communicated to Turkey that it should not establish a base in Syria, implicitly acknowledging the previous day's strike. At the same time, Israeli Chief of Staff General Eyal Zamir warned that his country would not tolerate the presence of any "hostile force" near its borders, speaking during a visit to Israeli troops deployed in southern Syria.

The 60-day truce during which Tehran and Washington were supposed to pursue talks toward a lasting peace ended Monday on a bellicose note, with both sides maintaining their positions. Tensions have flared anew between the two sides, who agree on just one thing: neither intends to give ground. Applying the old adage that the best defense is a good offense, Iran has apparently opted for an “entirely” offensive strategy, going so far as to give Washington an “ultimatum” (!) of “a few weeks” to “honor the terms of last June’s memorandum of understanding,” Reuters reported Monday, citing a senior Iranian official.

The Feast of the Assumption, on Saturday, August 15, was marked by a serious escalation in southern Lebanon, as Israeli warplanes carried out deadly raids on the towns of El-Ansar and Deir Zahrani in the Nabatiyeh district, killing a total of 11 people — including a senior Hezbollah military commander — and wounding around twenty others. The Jewish state announced late in the day that these strikes were carried out in retaliation for an attack launched late Friday by the pro-Iranian militia against an Israeli unit in the Ali el-Taher area, in the Nabatiyeh region. Three Israeli soldiers were wounded, two of them seriously. Following that operation, the Israeli air force launched intensive strikes at dawn on Saturday against the heights of Ali el-Taher, but the deadliest airstrike took place in El-Ansar, where seven people were killed.

The 60-day truce between the United States and Iran will expire in three days, with no official indication from either side about their intentions. Communication channels between Tehran and Washington remain severed, but mediators — notably Pakistan — appear to be working actively to secure an extension of the ceasefire established under the US-Iranian memorandum of understanding signed in mid-June. Both belligerents appear willing to extend the truce, though any such extension would not, at this stage, come with specific conditions attached, according to several corroborating media sources. The regional status quo is therefore set to continue, with no way of determining — given the hardening rhetoric on both sides — what might bring them back to the negotiating table.
